Saravá! Only a few days to spare before carnival and I haven’t blogged about any Brazilian music in 2018.  I’ll ask the pardon of the saints and orixás.   Here is another solid album from Almir Guinéto – I posted one here last year, shortly after he passed away. This has got plenty of ‘roots’ samba vibes and rhythms to it, from jongo to partido alto to pagode, but also has some of the sweet balladeer romanticism that would be elevated to diabetic levels by the future genre calling itself ‘pagode’.  For those unfamiliar with contemporary pagode – it might be imagined as what would happen if somebody taught One Direction how to sing in Portuguese and gave them cavaquinhos. But don’t worry, the honey-laced Mel Na Boca are still miles away from that, as are other ballads like Cenário or Lama Nas Ruas (co-written with the great Zeca Pagodinho).  Take away the dated-sounding synthesizer that occasionally crops up to remind you this was recorded in 1986, and these romantic songs would sound natural in the dulcet tenor of Cartola.  A lot of these songs became classics in Almir’s repertoire and he even rerecorded some of them again, like Caxambú.

There’s some mystical stuff in there wrapped in all that upbeat effervescent joy.  If you like this and the other album I posted, check out his work with Fundo de Quintal and Os Originais do Samba.  And check out Arlindo Cruz and Jorge Aragão too while you’re at it.

  1. Thanks for the lovely music! I would be dancing in the streets except there’s a few inches of snow on the ground here and it’s beastly cold.

  2. Any chance of reup on this one? Thank you

  3. What an incredible album! Thank you!
