So this post is a little like that gift in the bottom of your stocking that you didn’t notice until five or six days after Christmas.  In truth, I had this in the works, but didn’t have time to wrap it up for you.  It’s a cute little set of music that is a sequel to a better-known album of holiday tunes recorded a few years earlier by the Ramsey Lewis Trio.  Unlike that entry, this one has never been reissued on CD to my knowledge.  What’s cool about it is not only manages to genuinely swing on the tired old chestnuts, it also gifts us with a few original tunes by Lewis (Egg Nog) and Eldee Young (Plum Puddin’).  Ramsey plays the celeste on a portion of The Twelve Days of Christmas.  The only misstep is that there’s no drum solo on The Little Drummer Boy.  I’m going to start a conspiracy theory right here and now and state that this egregious omission was the motivation for the splintering of the original trio and the formation of Young-Holt Unlimited.  As seen in the personnel credits above, and the original liners below, Red Holt is absent from about half these tunes, with drum duties taken up by Steve McCall.  Cleveland Eaton, who would later replace Young, also appears on bass on Jingle Bells.  So I’m imagining a big argument over the lack of a drum solo on a nominal homage to drummers.  There, it’s now on the internet and hence must be true.  Also, it’s cute that their sweater supplier is credited on the back cover.
