Fatback Band – Keep On Steppin’ (1974 Event Records) – Flabbergasted Vibes
folder

This was the first Fatback Band album after leaving Perception Records for a long stint with Polydor subsidiaries Event and Spring Records.  It’s worth having just for the opening track, Mr. Bass Man, which is a funk classic.

But there is plenty here for friends of the funk – the loose jamming of New York Style or the tightness of Wicki-Wacky are standouts.  The soul ballads are maybe less compelling as the vocals tend to be a bit “pitchy”.

Incidentally the Southbound CD pressing of this album from Germany, sounds really nice.  The midrange is a bit scooped, which means the bass is maybe a bit fuller and warmer than the vinyl, and they left the dynamics intact.

1 Mr. Bass Man 3:22
2 Stuff 5:00
3 New York Style 5:29
4 Love 3:43
5 Can’t Fight The Flame 3:09
6 Wicki Wacky 3:20
7 Feeling 2:53
8 Keep On Steppin’ 4:21
9 Breaking Up Is Hard To Do 3:39
