From the CD tray:

“The album that marks the beginning of the most experimental phrase of the composer, that was very characterized by his leftist political ideologies, principally in this time period when he was persecuted by the military dictatorship. The hit that launched this disc was “Que as crianças cantem livres,” with the participation of a moving chorus of children. You can say that this was the last disc of the phase of popular success and hits by the artist” — Thiago Marques Luiz

This is a wonderful record, one that opens up more and more after repeated listens. Textured and diverse but very cohesive, there is a lot going on here than meets the ear at first, from the lyrics, to the arrangements, to the instrumentation, to the way it’s mixed. At times bordering on orchestral pop, prog rock, soul music, to the avant-garde, and even jazz rock, Taiguara pulls this off. Born in Uruguay but living in Brazil since 4 years of age, he had his roots in bossa nova and “sambalança” (an offshoot started by Carlos Lyra… basically bossa nova though) and the “festivals of song” during the 1960s. His own albums grow increasingly more interesting — I am not, however, familiar with his stuff from the latter half of the 70s, but would like to hear some. (He worked with esteemed oddball Hermeto Pascoal for example).

All of the songs on this record but one were penned by Taiguara. Among the huge roster of musicians are Noveli (bass), Francis Hime (piano), Wilson das Neves (drums) and Paulo Moura (clarinet). Enjoy this, it’s pretty damn amazing!

  1. Thanks for this Flabbergast, great to hear it, once again I wish that I spoke Portugese 🙂

Re the later 70s – the 1976 album "imyra, tayra, ipy, taiguara", with Pascoal and others, is an incredible album. I dug up a 320kbps version from Soulseek mid-last year, and a friend put it on his blog. link is still active :

  2. You're causing me a major problem…I'm running out of ways to say how unbelievably good this blog is.

Just thought I'd let you know – both links appear to be the 320kbps rip (i.e the flac isn't there)

  3. Hey Anon.2 — doh! try this one

Putting up two file-sets meansa a lot of cutting and pasting from one screen into a another. I am slowly learning that I need to triple check to make sure I haven't done what I did with this one — paste in the same link twice.. Thanks for pointing it out, and for the kind words!

  4. Jeez – that was quick. "Thanks" doesn't cut it.

  5. wow! what great blog! i'm impressed by your selections. Thanx!!!

  6. Fantastic album! Thank you very much.

    Radek

  7. And a re-up of this would be very nice too.

  8. Hi. Flac only?

  9. Thanks very much. You've turned me on to some great music, and I'm looking forward to this one.

  10. Yes, a very interesting and varied album indeed with some very nice arrangements. It does make me wish I understood Portuguese though. Thank you Flabbergast!

  11. Reading my own comment, I don't think I really expressed how much I like this album. I also committed a cardinal sin in that I wrote my comment while there were still a few songs left to listen to and it finishes very strong. "Cartinha Pro Leblon" (a tango?) is really sweet and catchy and "Nova York" is a mind-blower with its catchy intro full of momentum followed by a jazzy deconstruction and a ritardando ending that feels like the end of a subway ride as the train comes to a stop. I'm surprised that Airto wasn't involved in this project given its nature and time frame. Really super stuff!

  12. Grandioso artista e álbum. Você poderia, se possível, postar os álbuns do eterno Taiguara anteriores a este?
    Obrigado.

  13. Thank you so much for the repost.

  14. Please, what is the password to open zip archive of cd Fotografias Taiguara. thanks
