Roland Haynes – 2nd Wave (1975) (2020 Black Jazz / Real Gone Music)

It’s a total coincidence (or is it?) that my first two posts about the Black Jazz reissues have been by keyboardists, without any brass or reeds in their band. Weird, eh? This record, “2nd Wave” is great stuff by a one-and-done mysterious key tickler, Roland Haynes. There are actually two Fender Rhodes players here, so that should be welcomed by those of you for whom there is Never Enough Rhodes.  Not much is known about Roland Haynes, a situation that is not cleared up by the liner notes by Pat Thomas in the insert.  Thomas interviewed bassist Henry Franklin about the session, but nothing is said about Haynes’ background or foreground – where did he come from, and where did he go after this one lovely album?  It has a super relaxing vibe throughout, animated and funky but not as frenetic as jazz-funk hybrids were skewing by the mid-70s.  I highly recommend picking up this and any other of the Black Jazz reissues you come across, as they all sound great (so far).  Back when I posted the rather ho-hum debut from the label, an entry from label founder Gene Russell, I speculated whether there were more Black Jazz reissues to come — without knowing that a handful had already been released!  None of their catalog has been reissued on vinyl until now, and CD reissues of many titles have been hit-and-miss, so make sure not to miss out if this stuff ticks all your boxes.

  3. Thanks for making this available, Dr. Vibes. I really don’t know Roland Haynes at all but I listened to the sample tracks and it sounds pretty good. I like his very busy Rhodes playing. Thanks also for your excellent blog.
