Victor Jara – 'Complete' Anthology (1997)

WELL IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN, SEPTEBMER 11, when we stop to remember and commemorate the thousands who died as a result of one of the most inhumane attacks on liberty, freedom, and democracy that the modern world has even known.  I am talking, of course, about the brutal military coup in Chile that overthrew democratically-elected Salvador Allende and rounded up all the lefties in a stadium where they were beaten, tortured, “disappeared” and/or executed.  As  EVERYONE KNOWS BY NOW this coup was backed by the United States, at least partially staged if not quite orchestrated by the CIA after attempts to subvert the Allende government through all kinds of other strategies and covert operations, attempts begun in 1970 before he was even elected,  failed.  The coup ushered into power the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, also famously propped up by the US and later Margaret Thatcher and who oddly still has apologists.  Economists mentored by Milton Friedman  (‘The Chicago Boys) were flown in to use the Chilean economy as a laboratory for policies that would come to shape modern neoliberal economic policy that has more or less become the hegemonic view of how the allegedly ‘free’ market works.

Although the disappearances, torture, and killings would continue throughout the Pinochet regime, a staggering majority of them happened in 1973 right after the coup.  The most famous of them has to be the murder of folk singer Victor Jara at the national stadium.

This four-disc compilation is a bit odd.  It was released in Germany (on the label Plane Records) before his catalog was reissued in Chile and Argentina, and used vinyl records as the source for much if not all of the audio.  Also, Jara’s recorded legacy was subjected to a lot of confusing reissues and repackaging of his material under different titles and with different track sequencing, and issued by different labels.   So although this boxset was called “Complete”, it is far from it.  It features none of the material of the groups Cuncumén or Quilapuya of which he was a member, for example, nor does it represent all of the material he recorded on his own.  There is an 8-CD boxset out there that, I think, contains pretty much everything.  And in 2001 a handful of his individual albums were reissued with a lot of bonus tracks.

In any event, I had thought of only uploading “El derecho viver em paz” or “La pobación”, the records which are (rather unsurprisingly) my favorites out of these.
