Raulzinho – À Vontage Mesmo
1980 RCA Japan RCA – PG-143 || Orig. rel. 1965 RCA Victor (Brasil)
Do you like trombone? Do you like JAZZ trombone? Do you like trombone as the lead instrument on every track of a jazz record? If you answered “no” to any of those questions, well I still encourage you to give this album a shot. Because although trombonist Raul de Souza is the leader, it’s the band itself who is the star here. As a unit they’re just unreal. In the 1970s, Raul de Souza would have a comfortable career in the U.S. making jazz-funk / fusion records.
This is nothing like those. The “Sambalaço Trio” was a powerhouse with Airto Morreira on trap kit (who would also decamp to the US and make a ton of records there), and Cesar Camargo Mariano who would become the band leader and arranger for Elis Regina in the 70s. If you want to understand the relationship between bossa nova and samba, just listen to Airto’s brief drum solo on the title cut, where he weaves a few short bursts of triumphant samba rhythms effortlessly into what he’s doing. The whole record is full of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flourishes. Top shelf stuff.
Also, I have informally decided to go on a side quest to track down a copy of every album Airto Morreira has played on. It will be a tough challenge, but more achievable than Ron Carter. (Postscript: This album is featured in the 500 Brazilian Albums To Hear Before You Day or whatever it’s called by Charles Gavin)
(Post-post-script: This is a stereo mix. The original Brazilian pressing was a mono mix. However this is not ‘fake stereo’ / electronically-reprocessed for stereo but a genuine stereo mix. Cool!)
